Dear Flowering Rock Farm Community,
August is already here! We hope this newsletter finds you well! Here’s the latest news and updates from our farm:
Fresh Bouquets: Our beautiful flower bouquets sold out 2 weeks in a row at the Lake Lure Farmer’s market! Flowers are continuing to bloom, and we are excited to add zinnias to the mix. Our mixed bouquet jars can be purchased at our Farm Stand between 10AM-7PM (first come, first serve), Bearwallow Provision Company, the Lake Lure Farmer’s Market, or email floweringrockfarmnc@gmail.com for a local delivery.
Egg Update: We will soon be adding 2 young Cochins to our flock. Chochin chickens are known to be fantastic mother hens who will sit on a clutch of eggs and raise the chicks as their own. They will do this regardless of which chicken laid the egg. This is known as “going broody”. It is an instinct some chickens have that makes them want to sit on eggs. The only problem is that when chickens go broody, they stop laying eggs. This is an issue for farmers who don’t want a pause in their chicken’s egg production so in a lot of breeds this behavior has been bread out of them. Our golden comet chickens don’t go broody and sit on their eggs, so they won’t hatch unless we incubate them. Adding Cochins to our flock allows us to add more chickens that are raised within the flock next to their mother as opposed to in a brooder box with a heat lamp.
Since our flock is expected to double (possibly triple) by this time next year, we will need to build an additional chicken coop to comfortably house all these new chickens. We will also need to look for a few more roosters to ensure genetic diversity.
All this is to say we’re expanding, and we will be able to bring you more eggs!
